ABSTRACT
HAMLET ALIVE is a transmedia extension for the classic play "Hamlet" in the theatre of Kiel. I had the opportunity to design a location-based adventure game for smartphones that utilizes augmented reality elements to bring the story to life in a new and innovative way.
The goal of the game is to find the ghosts from Hamlet in Kiel and to solve tasks related to them in order to appease them and thus bring peace back to the city. The premise of this extension, which takes place chronologically after the play in the narration, is the death of the characters in Hamlet. I made use of the circumstance that no character of Hamlet died peacefully and anointed, to make the deceased characters such as Prince Hamlet, Ophelia, Claudius, etc. live on as ghosts in "purgatory" like the deceased King Hamlet.
The game will be available during the period in which Hamlet is played in the playhouse and will end with a big community event. The access is free of charge and open to all interested parties and serves the purpose of advertising for the Schauspielhaus and their production of Hamlet.
As a developer, this project challenged me to think creatively and outside the box to create an immersive experience for audiences. It was an exciting opportunity to bring a classic story to a new audience and to use technology to enhance the theatre-going experience.
• Designed the user interface for the game using Figma and created an animated prototype to showcase the design and functionality
• Designed the user experience for a transmedia extension of the story of Hamlet, creating an interesting and immersive experience for the audience
• Estimated a cost-evaluation for a location-based adventure game for smartphones utilizing augmented reality elements
