Letter of Motivation
To Whom It May Concern,
I write to convince you of my goal to study at the University of Applied Sciences JOANNEUM in Graz for an ERASMUS term in the winter of 2021/22. I am currently a student of the Masters programme “Media Conception” at the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel.
Last year, I finished my Bachelor of Arts in “Multimedia Production” in which I specialized in immersive and interactive media and achieved a grade of 1,6. Late in 2020 I started my Masters to further gain and practice knowledge of how new media influences our society, our environment and its associated technologies. This year I desire to go a step further and reach out to new people in a new environment. I want to listen to them, discuss our individual experiences and in so doing build my understanding of the impact we can create by conceiving affective media products.
I believe that the University of Applied Sciences JOANNEUM, with its masters courses in media, interaction and communication design, offers an ambitious opportunity to achieve this very goal. Being in the south of Austria and thereby in the heart of Europe, the environment creates the opportunity to build multicultural bridges and potentially impact the future of the continent. I love researching relevant topics that heavily influence our society by studying the past, the present and thereby the outlines of our future. The icing on the cake is to be able to build on this research by conceiving new, or developing existing, media. The University of Applied Sciences JOANNEUM in Graz has built a reputation for innovation in immersive and interactive media by emphasizing these fields in Masters level courses such as “Design & Research”, “Future Design Lab” and “International Design Discourse”. I would appreciate the privilege and be delighted to have a chance to be a part of each of these courses and many others.
I am an excellent candidate who can make a significant contribution to the University through my enthusiasm, skill and hard work. In my academic life, I discovered a passion for immersive and interactive media: how can we create exciting, social, and sustainable new media using technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, or artificial intelligence? In March 2020, together with two colleagues from my studies, I started the agency holoNative. By applying the scientific research we have done in our studies, we create products such as the 360° Boardgame. The project combines the classical boardgame with virtual reality, telling high impact narratives through interactive storytelling. In addition to that, I work as a developer at my university for the project “kultursphä”. In the last two and half years, alongside my studies, we examined opportunities and challenges of digitalization in cultural institutions. By applying the results into the conception, development, and successful launch of the web-application “” (featuring over 300 cultural heritage sites in Schleswig-Holstein and using technologies such as augmented reality) our team is contributing to bringing more people into our cultural institutions. As we uncover new questions, I try to tackle them by implementing scientific results into the digital product and reviewing them in real time. Consequently I discussed the possibilities and hazards that artificial intelligence can yield to our cultural communication in my bachelor’s thesis by providing a framework for using artificial intelligence in the “” application.
I am excited by the opportunity of studying in Graz and I look forward to hearing from you.
With best regards,
Colin Seán Kavanagh
